Green light to Mercadona to be installed next to the municipal market

Salou. Costa Dorada. 28 February 2018. Mercadona has received the approval of the full City Council of Salou to be able to settle on the commercial surface adjacent to the municipal market. The consistory believes that this concession will commercially revitalize the center of the municipality. Mercadona has won the public tender to build and operate an establishment dedicated to food in supermarket format. The multinational has proposed a fee of 500,000 euros for exploitation rights for a maximum of 30 years.

The government has approved with its majority the award to Mercadona, arguing that it is a project of general interest and that work is being carried out in parallel with the paradistas for the reform of the municipal market with the will to improve the facilities. It is a first action included in the proposal aimed at reordering the field. The government has justified granting the concession where an open-air car park is currently located in order to revitalize Salou centro's commercial core, along with the market space and taking references to multiple actions carried out in the markets in Catalonia, by far success already contrasted, so -as explained the Councilor for Internal Services, Jesus Barragán- "proposed to order a large commercial space in the downtown area where there are more stable shops in Salou throughout the year but we need an engine that revitalizes the area and create the critical mass of people who transit through the area. " We intend, as the councilor said, to energize the area that brings together the axis of the Via Roma, Via Augusta, Barcelona Street, Berenguer de Palou, among other streets, and also, by proximity the municipal market.

The opposition, in the plenary session, has requested the withdrawal of the item from the agenda until reaching an agreement with the merchants to understand that there has not been sufficient dialogue with the sellers. Finally, the point has gone ahead with the 12 favorable votes of the government (8 of CiU and 4 of the PSC) and the contrary votes of Citizens, PP, ERC and Guanyem Salou.
