Salou is committed to reducing the use of private cars on its streets

The City Council wants to reduce the use of cars in the urban core

Salou. Costa Dorada. 16 August 2022.
New urban mobility plan (PMUS) promoted by Salou City Council that promotes mobility on foot, by bicycle and by public transport.

The objectives envisaged by this new plan are that mobility is more consistent (in accordance with the development of the municipality), more effective, and that there is a criterion for the rational use of means of transport. It is a plan that arises from the need for parking and public transport accentuated in the summer by the large number of tourists that Salou receives.

For this reason, the plan studies several alternatives with the objective of reducing internal journeys with motorized vehicles in favor of non-motorized ones. In addition, the traffic calming actions carried out so far by the City Council are particularly valued for the good results obtained and the plan urges to strengthen these measures, especially in the summer season, when the population increases due to the arrival of visitors and tourists in Salou. The final objective is to reduce the use of private motorized vehicles in the municipality of Salou by up to 11%.

The new Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan

This new Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan contemplates the following basic strategic lines of work, with 9 objectives:
  • Modal transfer of the private vehicle in non-motorized modes and public transport.
  • Reduce motorized mobility (veh-km traveled by private vehicle).
  • Minimize travel distance.
  • Increase the surface and quality of the pedestrian network.
  • Encourage the use of public transport.
  • Guarantee accessibility to the mobility system.
  • Manage parking supply and demand to reduce rush hour traffic.
  • Reduce the externalities of the transport system: GEI emissions, atmospheric pollutants and reduce accidents.
  • Incorporate new technologies into mobility management.

This plan is based on 13 areas of action:
  • Mobility on foot
  • Mobility by bicycle
  • Mobility with public transport
  • Mobility in private motorized vehicle
  • Parking lot
  • Urban distribution of goods
  • Secure mobility
  • Low emissions
  • Other mobility planning tools
  • Promotion, education and awareness for the use of sustainable ways
  • Creation and/or modification of existing regulations
  • Urban perspective
  • Actions corresponding to other administrations

The Mobility Plan document can be consulted in its entirety at this link.

The plan was definitively approved at the plenary session in July and was established by Salou City Council, citizen participation and the technical team thus taking into account all the sectors involved in mobility. It has a period of validity of 6 years.

In the presentation of this new plan, the mayor Pere Granados pointed out with satisfaction that "with all the citizen contributions and the technical work that has been carried out, during the entire development process, we have achieved a consensual and adapted document, in accordance with the needs and the reality of our town".

The Councilor for Land Management and Housing, Marc Montagut, has stated that "this document will be a tool that will allow us to plan and execute, over the next few years and according to budget availability, the improvement of the municipality's mobility, basically, with actions aimed at sustainability and safety".

The councilor for Citizen Security and Mobility, David González, explained that "the PMUS of Salou is a strategic document that must mark the lines of action in terms of mobility, in the broadest sense, in Salou, for the coming years ".
